One of the most spectacular day trips from Athens — a full-day journey to Meteora, the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage site where ancient monasteries perch atop towering rock pillars hundreds of metres above the plain of Thessaly.
Depart Athens at 08:00. En route, stop at Thermopylae, the pass where 300 Spartans under King Leonidas made their legendary stand against the Persian army in 480 BC. Visit the statue of Leonidas and the museum before continuing north.
Arriving in Kalambaka, the landscape transforms dramatically. Visit two of the six grand active monasteries — including the Great Meteoron, the Monastery of Varlaam, or the Monastery of the Holy Trinity (famous for its appearance in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only). The 16th-century frescoes are among the finest examples of post-Byzantine painting.
Important: Visitors must cover shoulders and knees to enter. Ladies are advised to wear long skirts (some monasteries provide them). Return to Athens in the late afternoon, completing a 12–13 hour day filled with history, faith, and unforgettable scenery.
